Charlie Kirk Family Gets Greedy

The family of Charlie Kirk alleges a "series of stunning failures and reckless decisions" by Utah Valley University led to the conservative activist's on-campus assassination last year. I disagree.

Kirk, the co-founder of the conservative student organization Turning Point USA, put himself in the public eye voluntarily. His opinions were controversial. It is not up to anyone other than Charlie Kirk to provide for his own protection. When thousands of people are attending an event, it’s ridiculous to believe an outside security force of any size can stop someone hellbent on destruction. This is nothing more than a family looking for an easy payday. It’s appalling.

Kirk was fatally shot while speaking at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, in September of 2025. The gunman fired from the rooftop of a campus building over 400 feet away as Kirk was speaking before a crowd of approximately 3,000 people.

The family claims the event "came against a well-known backdrop of risk," in an email addressed to the Utah Office of the Attorney General. Yet, despite knowing this, he still chose to participate. No one forced him to do so; he did it on his own free will. If he wanted better security, perhaps he should have hired a better personal security detail than the one he had. Are they being sued?

The notice cites high-profile incidents as recent examples of political violence -- including the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump by a rooftop sniper at a 2024 campaign rally, the 2025 murder of a Minnesota state legislator and her husband at their home, and the 2022 hammer attack against Rep. Nancy Pelosi's husband.

Acknowledgment of such incidents further proves that public appearances (some even involving the Secret Service) are extremely difficult to secure, yet… he put himself out there voluntarily.

The notice alleges that the university failed to conduct a "meaningful risk assessment" before approving the outdoor location and did not dedicate enough security resources. Just six campus police officers were assigned to the event, university police have said.

Excuse me, but this is a college, not the aforementioned Secret Service. The duties of a college are to educate, not provide security for a controversial, public figure. The notice further alleges that the university did not monitor the event in real time, claiming surveillance footage showed an individual running across the roof of the Losee Center for Student Success. Again, it’s a college, not the Secret Service.

Defendants claim they worked with Kirk's private security team to establish security protocols for the event. "We worked together. He has his team and they do this all over the country. We all know that. It's not uncommon for them. They're very comfortable on campuses. And I was coordinating with his lead security guy," Chief Long said on the day of his death.

Despite this, Kirk still put himself out there. When one chooses to be a controversial figure in the public eye, one should also accept a certain amount of risk from lunatics hellbent on destruction. Sadly, greed trumps logic.

El reconocimiento de tales incidentes demuestra aún más que las apariciones públicas (algunos incluso involucran al Servicio Secreto) son extremadamente difíciles de asegurar, sin embargo... se puso ahí fuera voluntariamente.

El aviso alega que la universidad no llevó a cabo una "evaluación de riesgos intencional" antes de aprobar la ubicación al aire libre y no dedicó suficientes recursos de seguridad. Sólo seis policías del campus fueron asignados al evento, ha dicho la policía universitaria.

Disculpe, pero esto es una universidad, no el mencionado Servicio Secreto. Los deberes de un colegio son educar, no proporcionar seguridad para una figura controvertida y pública. El aviso alega además que la universidad no monitoreó el evento en tiempo real, alegando que las imágenes de vigilancia mostraban a un individuo corrido por el techo del Centro de Losee para el Success de Estudiantes. De nuevo, es una universidad, no el Servicio Secreto.

Los acusados aseguran que trabajaron con el equipo de seguridad privada de Kirk para establecer protocolos de seguridad para el evento. "Trabajamos juntos. Tiene su equipo y ellos hacen esto por todo el país. Todos lo sabemos. No es raro para ellos. Están muy cómodos en los campus. Y yo estaba coordinando con su jefe de seguridad", dijo el jefe Long el día de su muerte.

A pesar de esto, Kirk todavía se puso ahí fuera. Cuando uno elige ser una figura controvertida en el ojo público, también se debe aceptar una cierta cantidad de riesgo de lonáticos empeñados en la destrucción. Tristemente, la codicia triunfó en la lógica.
